USA vs. Honduras Viewing Locations

Banging on the it wont help either.

Banging on it won't help either.

If you’re looking for all TSG USMNT Honduras coverage, click here.

From 10/10: We are up to 37 locations broadcasting the game in English as of Friday morning.

From 10/02: We received an email from our contact at the rights holder who said that the list on CopaTVOnline represents only the English broadcasts and that they will be “updating the list on an on-going basis.” For Spanish viewing locations, and there are many, you can go to

(Here is the most current list of Spanish telecast carriers, pulled out from that web site)

The below is the revised list of confirmed establishments who have contracted for the English telecast:

  1. Chicago – Small Bar
    Location: 2049 West Division
    Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: Great bar owner who is a passionate soccer fan, located in the Ukranian Village neighborhood

  2. San Diego – O’Brien’s Pub
    Location: 4646 Convoy St.
    Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: It’s in San Diego!, Official US Soccer Bar, you will watch the game with Mark of TSG
Cons: None – it’s in San Diego!
Extras: Just had a conversation with Tom at O’Brien’s. He assured me it will be a 100% US crowd. The pub has 20 taps of local and craft beers, 120+ “fine bottled beers” (ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY!) and great “pub grub”. No cover, but a $15 food / drink min. (Alright, I’ll say it, I’m stoked to go there!)

  3. San Francisco – Danny Coyles
    Location: 668 Haight St.
    Yelp Rating: 3.5 Stars
Pros: I hear the Bay Area is nice this time of year
Cons: You will watch the game with Matthew of TSG (Can you guess which brother is writing this update?)
Matt from TSG: As I posted in the comments, my buddy Matty King throws his holiday red-n-slutty party here each year and it’s a great time. Good beers on tap, just the right amount of darkness, good soccer crowd and HDTV. Love it.

  4. AlbanyWolff’s Biergarten
Location: 895 Broadway (Yelp lists 885, but they are wrong)
    Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: Upstate NY in the fall, 14 German, Czech and Belgian biers on tap including the Spaten Optimator (7.2% ABV)
Cons: Looking at their website the place looks great, so I’ll go with…watching the game with a bunch of politicos from the New York State capital

  5. New York – Madison Square Garden, Play By Play Sports Bar
    Location: Four Pennsylvania Plaza
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars (only one review)
Pros: Located in the greatest city in history of the solar system (Matthew and I are from NY), has pictures of famous New York Knicks and Rangers (though hopefully not the one of MJ dunking on Patrick from the baseline)
    Cons: $20 ticketed event
Extras: MSG is looking to make some money off this so they are billing it as a “Viewing Party” hosted by former Cosmos star Shep Messing

Who’s Your Player of the Year?

Add to: Facebook | Digg | | Stumbleupon | Reddit | Yahoo Buzz | Newsvine

The finalists for the 2009 Honda Player of the Year were announced this morning. This award goes to “best performer on the USMNT.”

Your finalists…

Tim Howard

Tim Howard
This TSG favorite has been a rock in net for most of the year including 8 saves against Spain in an historic win for US Soccer. The USMNT’s pack-it-in and counter-attack approach has only enjoyed some success due to Howard’s ability to come up big when the defense breaks down. He hasn’t been perfect, but he’s still world class.

Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan
The “Summer of Soccer” could have just as easily be named the “Summer of Donovan.” Lando’s performance at the Confed Cup helped to elevate both his stature and that of US Soccer in the world. However, the blow-by that conceded the game-winning goal in Mexico may be my most enduring image of him in 2009.

Jozy Altidore

Jozy Altidore
Receive…Pivot…Shoot…Score…USA 1, Spain 0. Jozy took a big leap this year towards becoming a force to be reckoned with on the world stage and is on his way to becoming a US sports star, not just a soccer star. If all goes according to plan he’ll be a fixture up top for the Yanks Nats Stars & Stripes USMNT for years to come.

As you probably can tell by my commentary, I’d vote for Howard. He’s had to play with a number of different back-lines and produced while being a (vocal) team leader. Donovan comes in a very close second and could easily win the award based off the press he received following South Africa. And I am guessing Jozy is a distant third, in large part because he’s so young and from my perspective will be in line for a number of these in the coming years.

As a side note, the award is voted on by 221 sports journalists. TWO HUNDRED TWENTY ONE…Assuming we are talking about American journalists, I’d be hard pressed to come up with TWENTY-ONE that have the detailed knowledge of the USMNT to vote intelligently here (which is why Donovan will probably win the award). Am I wrong ?

More importantly, who do YOU think should win?

(vote on the right)

Barcelona versus Dynamo Kyiv – Group F Champs League

Please can i take this free kick...Not today..fine...what about saturday?

Please can i take this free kick...Not today..fine...what about saturday?

PEEP PEEP: Well all told a comfortable Barca win. They will have no problem getting to the knock out stage. Same cannot be said for Liverpool who played better in the second half but still lost 2-0. I still maintain a knockout cup would be better. Till the next time. Enjoy

90 minutes plus 3: Kyiv seem to have found a second gear. A little too late i think

88: Number 10 for Kyiv latches on to a back header pass by a Barca defender and sends his lob over the net. Gets a knee to the sensitive male area for his troubles. They immediately spray something on it and he feels better. Must get that spray.

85: Zlatan trying everything at this point including a dramatic overhead tumble/kick which does nothing. He is being substituted for Jeffren. He had a good game and always looked dangerous and setup Pedrito beautifully for the second goal BUT still hasn’t shook off the curse of midweek goal droughts.

“We’re Happy We Got The Result”

I’m not sure if Bob Bradley wrote “we’re happy we got the result” in the talking points passed out to the players or they just picked that up from his post-game talks. Either way, that sound byte was practically the mantra of players and coaches alike in the last round of qualifying for the USMNT.

Recently, US Soccer posted two behind-the-scenes videos on the match with El Salvador with pre-, during and post- game insights from Jonathan Spector and sure enough the mantra finds its way into the commentary.

Part 1: Pasta and Chicken
This first video is about the pre-game meal, bus trip and warm-ups.

More video after the jump.

Tuesday 09/29 One-Liners

• Nice job by Shaun on the a little pre-game preview of today’s Champion’s League “match-ups.” See the story below.

• Thanks to TSG commentator Antonio (and ESPN……THREE……SIXTY!…that’s how I feel about it) I will be watching even more soccer. About to take in the USMNTers against Cameroon’s Indominatable Lions on “the 360.”

Amazing DeMerit's eye injury didn't come on the pitch.

Amazingly, DeMerit's eye injury didn't come on the pitch.

• Speaking of the Indomitable Lions, TSG is working on our follow-up to our nickname piece.  Add more commentary here.

• USMNT’er and Confederation’s Cup stalwart Jay DeMerit is now a candidate for surgery as his contact-sliced eyeball is not healing. Good luck in getting back out their Jay; we miss the cover in the middle. Paging Goodison and Conrad.

Freddy Adu sleeps with a soccer ball and the Twitterati is giving him hell for it. Check it out here. Ah, the instant feedback of Twitter. Oh, and we’re again in Freddy’s corner–the kid is passionate.

• TSG crashed and burned hard on our EPL prognostications, no wins for Arsenal and Chelsea and we gave West Ham a chance on the road. We’ll be laying low for awhile. In other news, we see Honduras 10 – USA 0 — okay hopefully we reverse jinxed this.

• Hull City hopefully get an injury boost with a date set for the return of former Fulham middleman Jimmy Bullard. Any English nattie team fans want to tell us who’s fallen futher, Bullard or Bentley?

Champs League – Round 2…..zzzzzzzz

A much more exciting format for a competition than the Champs League

A much more exciting format for a competition than the Champs League

The group phase of the Champions league tends to bore the tears out of most viewers. The primary phase of the competition has been diluted due to the inclusion of just about every team in Europe. Of course that is an exaggeration, but with the exception of a couple of matches most games tend to offer little or no excitement on paper. Obviously thats why they play the games, but even if FK Rubin Kazan were to beat Barcelona at home, the chances of them maintaining that form to qualify to the knockout stages is slim to none.

Now i grew up elsewhere (Europe) but i believe there is no finer competition/cup setup for excitement and drama than the college bball NCAA tourney. Yes the FA Cup, Copa del Rey etc… are great competitions with a similar win or you’re out format but it takes place over a very long time. March madness takes place over a month, pretty much the entire country gets involved, the players die for their teams and its just plain awesome. The best team or at the very least the team that can maintain a consistent form usually wins the whole thing. There are ALWAYS upsets.

With the current champs league format, where as you might not be able to predict each and every game, you can be fairly certain which teams will progress. Some teams pretty much win their group with 1 or 2 remaining games and then field out weaker teams so that their fringe/younger players get a run out. That’s great for them but do fans really want to see no names like Michael Owen when they paid to see Wayne Rooney etc…
