USA vs. Panama: Live Commentary

Jamaica couldn't see Clint Dempsey, will Panama?

Update:

No Donovan in the starting 11

USA lineup: Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Bocanegra, Lichaj; Bradley, Jones; Bedoya, Kljestan, Dempsey; Agudelo

It’s the United States.

It’s Panama.

All over again.

Probably for the right to play Mexico in front of 90,000 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The States will attempt to keep their midfield from being stretched while Panama will look to bunker more than counter in this one.

Most expect a big States win. 1-0, 2-0 after Panama starts pressing, perhaps?

Starting line-ups coming up.

Supersub Landy D. I can dig it. Tell Bedoya to run hard for about 45-65 mins then Landon comes in for the deathblow. Really think Bedoya can finally net one today though. Just have that feeling, and he’s looked so dangerous and energetic lately.

Bedoya scoring wouldn’t suprise me. And to be honest, neither would Lichaj. He almost had one against Jamaica and he looks pretty dangerous on the flank

  3. I never thought I’d be excited to see Landon not starting, especially less than a year after Algeria. But I’m gonna take this as a sign of progression for our team.

Also, this saves Dolo’s legs a little bit. Bedoya on the right wing keeps Stevie from having to come up the right wing every time down the field.

Ever since Bradley released the roster, he’s been riding a series of “I’d better be right here” decisions. Confusing.

Can the U.S. pass through a lineup with an equal number of midfielders? Will Agudelo get isolated? Do Goodson/Boca have the pace to hang with Panama? Will the game be decided before I leave for the Caltrain to enjoy the sweet wonders of America’s most scenic ballpark? (Yeah, more than Wrigley.)

I went to the Giants game last night. Unbelievable implosion by Bumgarner giving up 8 earned runs on 9 hits to the first 10 batters (at least he struck out the opposing pitcher). First time I’ve seen a starting pitcher pulled after 1/3 inning. Great experience at AT&T Park though. Enjoy!

It’s not Adu’s size that’s disqualifying, it’s his balance. If you compared adu and David silva, you’d think both would be about equal in withstanding challenges; if anything, that Adu would be better. And yet Adu is disturbed by the slightest of challenges and you need a two-by-four to get the ball off of Silva.

But… it was. Sure, sometimes he dances with the ball too much, but he’s also one of the only players we have capable of doing something with the ball before defenders as organized and tough and quick as Panama’s close in. Only someone really determined to hate on Bob Bradley would refuse to admit that this was why Bradley inserted him, or would ignore the fact that once inserted, Adu dictated the play when he had the ball rather than reacting to the defense, which is all that most of the rest of the team did. Did he turn the ball over a couple of times? Sure. But you can’t score goals unless you take those chances.

You can’t dictate play if you have the stuffing beaten out of you. Of the first three possessions Adu had, two of them ended with Adu sprawled on the ground. The first had that pass, but that was the
consequence of a Panamian mistake. There’s no reason Agudelo couldn’t’ve punished panama equally well on the break, and plenty of reason to believe Adu would spend most of the time losing the ball because he can’t hold onto it.

This isn’t some idea I came up with specifically to hate on Bradley–I’ve been saying it for ages now.

            • Posted by Joamiq on 2011/06/22 at 7:04 PM

There’s nothing inherently wrong with plays that end up with a player on the ground, and yes, you can dictate play before you get knocked down. Getting knocked down itself might mean that you’re causing the opposition so much consternation that they can’t do anything but foul you. Look, “that pass” was brilliant. There’s no getting around it. Agudelo holds up the ball pretty well, but he hasn’t shown that kind of vision in distributing the ball, on top of which, he was pretty gassed in the second half. His effectiveness was clearly lower than it had been in the first half. More than anything, the entire team looked out of ideas. A lot of square and back passes. No running off the ball or with the ball and no incisive passes. Yes, Adu gets knocked off the ball easily. But he also shows some initiative and can operate quickly in tight spaces. It wasn’t just that one pass, by the way – he had a couple of other great plays as well, especially the time he used a mix of hesitation and sprints to make something out of nothing on the right and deliver a ball that really should have at least resulted in a dangerous chance. His ball skills were also really useful in retaining possession to kill the game off (and, I must point out, he held the ball pretty well without getting knocked off after those first couple of plays). This is all stuff that, by the way, Adu has done in the past, and stuff that almost no other US player has done. It would be unfair not to believe that Bob saw something in training that made him think that Adu could do this effectively in the situation the team found itself in today. I mean, you don’t put in a player who hasn’t played in two years by accident. It was a risky but smart move, and it was the right move. In this situation, it worked. In others, it might not – Adu has deficiencies, clearly. But you have to give the coach credit for making the right call today. If he’d listened to you, this match would have gone to penalties.

            • Posted by dth on 2011/06/23 at 12:13 AM

There’s nothing inherently wrong with plays that feature players knocked on their backside. Nevertheless I think anyone being objective would concede that if a player gets knocked on his backside, and it’s not a foul, guess what? You lost the ball. That’s Freddy Adu: a guy who will lose the ball because he will get knocked over again and again because he has no balance and no speed to separate himself from defenders. A perfect example came on the first lost ball from Adu: he actually beat a guy, but didn’t have the speed to separate himself…so he ended the play on his ass and without the ball. It doesn’t matter how creative you are, or what skills you can do on the practice pitch, if you lack the ability to express it on the field on a consistent basis. Adu doesn’t have that ability. I hope Bradley doesn’t get it in his head that he can, because he’ll probably fail.

And, sure, Bradley can see what he wants in practice. But he’s also seen things from Onyewu in practice and Robbie Findley in practice. His judgment is not only not infallible, but often times pretty shaky. There was no reason to expect the Freddy Adu substitution to work, and he got lucky for it to have worked. Sometimes if you draw for an inside straight you get the right card. That’s poker. That’s soccer. That’s life. I wouldn’t plan on it though.

Bradley has been very poor the past two games with the number of leisurely touches and the soft weight of his passes. The U.S. needs to play at a faster tempo and Bradley is the chief culprit in making it slower than it needs to be. THIS is where we miss Holden.

BB’s insertion of Adu was only slightly short of genius. It was, despite what some of the commenters here seemed to think, EXACTLY what was needed. Without Adu, this game is still in extra time right now.

On bradley, I disagree. Although his indecison and foot-glued-to-balll syndrome might be a product of the US’s off-ball stagnation, i still think he spent way to much time on the ball. Midfielders dictate play by making quick passes and switching play among other things. Bradley did neither

It really was a tough fought game. I honestly thought that the US would win more comfortably, precisely because you have better players. But saying that, Panama only created a couple of half chances – difficult to say that they deserved the win, but perhaps a little unlucky if that makes sense?

I’d like to see a stat on passes completed in the opponents half. I think panama takes the cake with that one. But in general, panama looked way more dangerous in the attacking third and pushed US to the limit regarding bend and bend some more defense. Their ball movement (on and off) was sublime.

And I don’t think Panama would be ahead on that stat either. The US strung together over a dozen passes in the Panama half on multiple occasions. Those passes just weren’t very dangerous for the most part.

It seems like they will go through stretches where they look like they belong at the top of Concacaf and then stretches where it looks like they have never played the game before. Big questions will also be how long Blas Perez and Baloy can play at the top level as both are now 30.

A hard fought loss is as good if not better than an easy win or less climactic one. With that said, I think we can outdue Mexico in the final if given the opportunity.

Wow, that was an ugly challenge. Honduras lucky not to be down a man right now.

everyone has to give credit where credit is due. coach bradley deserves serious credit. he really does and that is the truth. mexico might make the finals of the copa oro, usa is already in. adu deserves some credit and these people on here going on about this and that, adu is a playmaker and tucked into the central attacking spot in front of jones and junior, and behind aguedelo, he can be most dangerous. of course he can interchange with donovan and deuce. donovan must be suffering from something and deuce is a monster to be going as hard as he is. one win away from an early trip to brasil, that is very nice. lichaj is getting better every game and it should always be noted the players missing from the us roster, just to add spice to just exactly how nice this team really can be.

Haha…. ok silly comment: Listening to World Football Daily from yesterday or Monday, Kenny was blasting the stars and stripes for a lack of camaraderie and a bad attitude. In particular, he was saying that there was an “alpha dog” (bill simmons) issue between demspey and donovan, and in evidence he said how they never seemed to celebrate each others goals. Kenny was also calling for Adu to see some minutes.

So what happens? Adu splits the D on a gorgeous diagonal to Donovan, who sets up Dempsey’s goal, and they proceed to jump into each other’s arms pointing at each other “you” “no, you!” “no, you!” “no, you’re the man!”

Think Bradley and the boys listen to WFD or what?

I’m as big a Bob Doubter as anyone but the Adu sub was exactly what the team needed to unlock a tired Panama squad. He seems to have grown and thickened quite a bit but haven’t seen enough to argue points above.

I spent more time than I would like tonight shouting at Mikey to move the ball FORWARD occasionally. Notice the difference between when Jones manages possession and Mikey. I agree above that he is dominating the ball far too much and their style of play suffered because of it. I don’t hate him out there to be clear but he seems to kill the tempo when he has the ball this much. And if one more person refers to him as a “destroyer” I’m going to puke. His man defense would be comical if it didn’t result in free distribution and movement by his mark.
Howard saves our bacon again. Still cannot figure out why no one at this level can clear or head the ball where they want it to go.
Lichaj is a beast and will only get better with reps.
    TSG rocks!

when you really get down to it with the adu situation, he went to benfica and was playing behind rui costa and angel di maria. at monaco, he had a president fighting with the coach over his place on the team, and then there was some gun charges, or maybe that was jozy at club xerox. anyway, freddy does go to greece and looks pretty good, when the fields are not complete mud pits, which was like one out of five games. he has obviously done well enough in turkey. all the rest like sion and randers and blah blah blah, its all hyperboil.

seriously, freddy has never stunk it up in a usa jersey, and that is the truth. if anything, he was relied on to heavily and that probably cost the usa against austria in the under 20 in canada and maybe even in beiijing. coach bradley has been smart with freddy and hopefully it will really start to pay some dividends, because it sure did tonight.

Uh huh. Sion in the Swiss First division wuz wrong, Ingolstadt a bottom-feeding 2. Bundesliga team wuz wrong…it finally took a Turkish second division team to see the light and bring in Freddy Adu.

Do Freddy Adu proponents realize how silly they sound sometimes?

seriously dth, your blogging about how freddy cant do this and that last night during the game, meanwhile freddy comes on and does this and that. now that is silly. plus you are a soccer officianado, so you know how benfica likes to buy and sell players. freddy did not need to go to europe to become a stock option, he needed to go and learn his way into a system. but whatever, today is a new day and last night freddy adu did what was asked of him by his country and dth, you were on here blogging about something or other. thanks for your support.

    Bob has balls of steel.
Tough to bech landy again but its the right call, adu sub could have been his immediate pink slip, now he could be a good super sub type.
Sasha looked a step slow like always.
Was very surprised bob didn’t pull jones after we had lead, a yellow for him would have been on bobs shoulders, he got lucky there.
Juan worked hard and I appreciate that but he didn’t much besides that.

The collective gasp at the bar tonite when the camera went to adu was just classic.

You seem to forget that he only picked 3 forwards in the first place.

But like I said above, give credit where credit is due.

  47. Is anyone else watching the Mexico vs Honduras game? Currently goose eggs for all. Mexico is maintaining a lot of pressure but Honduras will get counters that look really dangerous at times. Mexico doesn’t look organized at all at times.

By the way, when was the last time the USA had 3 clean sheets in a row??? Underrated aspect of these past few games?

The switch to Boca over Ream has been a revelation… revealing how not ready Ream is. Or am i wrong?

    • Partially that, partially the fact that we haven’t been heavily bothered on the left flank for the last three games. Lichaj’s pretty damn good.

I think basically everything has gone right at once. They’ve become very solid on the flanks, haven’t faced an opposing striker who can expose Boca’s physical limitations, and have gotten a couple good matchups in a row. Mexico’s style of play will pose much greater challenges.

About Lichaj, anyone who watched his midseason A.V. (mis)adventure knows that, on a good day, he’s already EPL quality. His inexperience and nervousness rendered him mistake-prone, and, fair or not, he wasn’t afforded the time to grow out of it. You gotta think he’ll be back.

      • Is there a more likely player to wind up in the starting XI on a major European team than Lichaj, among players who aren’t currently doing so? I don’t think that there is.

Timothy Chandler has a higher ceiling than Lichaj, I think.

            • There was a mention from the German FA a week or two ago saying they weren’t interested, let’s hope that continues to be the case. With Chandler and Lichaj on the defensive flanks that’s a bright looking future.

            • Posted by dth on 2011/06/23 at 11:54 AM

People are just being paranoid. The Germans say they won’t call him up, his agent says he won’t call him up, he himself has had nothing but enthusiastic things to say…it’s incredibly paranoid at this point to believe that Timmy Chandler will play for anyone other than the U.S.

Watching Mexico-Honduras as well. I thought Honduras had a goal on that last strike.

And John Henry, I agree with you on Ream. He didn’t look ready. Plus, moving Boca inside improves not just one but two positions in the back line given Lichaj being nailz.

One question: is anyone aware of rebroadcasts of the Gold Cup final? I’m attending a wedding at the same time and would prefer not to have to wait until 8 PM the next day (naturally trying to keep myself in a state of ignorance.)

To the above: No replays of the games, but if you search for file downloads you will find them.

Next: Bocanegra never gets his due for what he does best. Defensive clearances, especially with his head. He is incredible in the air, wins everything. He’s a quick jumper, has excellent hops, and has the timing of Kevin Love. Lichaj has been great, but the real difference in the back has been Boca in the middle: deflecting attacks, pressuring opponents, and providing cover.
