• WeatherCarson conditions call for 65 and sunny for the day, with it being in the mid 60’s around game time. Pristine conditions for the US to score with a nice combination of Timmy Chandler to Landon Donovan.

Great Whites off the San Diego coastline! Apocalyptic. Wait...does this mean the US also found a true striker?!

• Surf: It is up!

How up you say? Enough to make a boat smuggling Mary J to the USA crash.

Enough to….make sharks head for the coastline!

A friend is taken from life too early and these guys rallied for a field in his honor.

• The last time:

Yes, King Jonathan Bornstein of Honduras heading home the game-evening goal to put the US first in Hex. Uh, he won’t be attendance tonight.

• Quick hitters:

  • This match will mark the 29th meeting between the teams, tying Costa Rica with Canada for second place on the USA’s list of most matches played against CONCACAF opponents.
  • The U.S. and Costa Rica are deadlocked at 11-11-6 in the all-time series.
  • At home, the U.S. holds an 11-3-4 record in all competitions, including eight World Cup qualifiers (5-1-2), six Gold Cup matches (5-0-1) and four friendlies (1-2-1).
  • The U.S. defeated Costa Rica 2-0 in the final of the 2002 Gold Cup.
  • The Costa Ricans have outscored the U.S. 34 to 31 in the series.
  • This is the first friendly between the teams since 1995, a 2-1 win for Costa Rica on May 28 in Tampa, Fla.
  • Donovan and Bocanegra are the only two U.S. players on the roster with goals against Costa Rica. All three of Donovan’s have come in World Cup qualifying, while Bocanegra scored in the 3-2 win on July 26, 2003, in the third-place game of the 2003 Gold Cup.

I think it’s good that we are scheduling friendlies with other CONCACAF opponents. At first glance, it seems boring but it makes sense. Klinsmann’s first goal is to qualify US for the World Cup. He’s said that there are opponents (top 10) that we might not attack and others (CONCACAF) where it makes sense to take the game to them and impose his philosophy of more attack-minded, calculated risk-taking football. What better time than before qualifying to put his theories into practice?

In the past and during qualifying, we have had trouble breaking down bunkering teams, especially the lesser teams in CONCACAF, leaving us sometimes in a monumental struggle where we go after them early, give up an early goal, then have to scratch and crawl to get a draw or even lose. It’ll be interesting to see if Klinsmann’s new way of thinking will lead us to play more attractive, offensive-minded soccer and also to get good results, even in these upcoming friendlies.

Thank you for putting out a reasonable starting line up. other blogs i’ve read have not even been close. This was exactly what I was thinking too.

*jurgen love torres to much not to start him
*I wouldn’t expect for Sacha and Torres to play side by side but this shows that one can advance further into the attack or outside as the wings cut in, while the other stays further back as deep lying distributor. But neither will play CAM so that Donovan can cut in and have chandler come careening down the right flank.
*Maybe edu or spector (who plays DCM for birmingham the past couple games) get put at CDM if they’ve shown klinsi this past week that he can do it, but there will be that CDM sitting on top the back 4. No way we see torres on the wing again like beginning of last game.
*other possiblity is seeing donovan slide behind altidore as the #10 with someone sliding out to that right wing, maybe pontius or rogers or sacha

Ps here is the whole country of honduras celebrating borsteins goal. How ironic is it that he is the only american player where a whole country celebrated in the streets due to them….

i still can’t get over the irony

Heard tell it’s a surfers/photographer’s leg bent at the knee while duck diving (seeing the reflection on the face of the wave). Which means, sadly…… the striker drought continues.

From camp reports and press remarks I suspect Donovan will be in the hole, not on a wing. So who plays opposite Shea?

what’s the streaming site again? i really need to put that in bookmarks now that I don’t have DIRECTV anymore (and until my ISP allows ESPN3)

it seems like sacha is a pretty logical choice to play out on the right. and he will be able to switch with donovan. we are going to see a lot of off the ball movement tonight, provided by five players, altidore, shea, donovan, castillo, and chandler. tonights game, might just represent the first time ever the usa has brought two legit threats from the fullback spot. hopefully altidores heading ability is on tonight.
