MLS Midweek Game Night: Live Commentary

Woot! Woot!

All aboard! And away we go.... (yes, you'll see this image a few more times this year.)

All aboard the Perlaza MEGABUS!

Three matches–all with playoff implication.

FC Vollkswagen vs. FC Corona as Charlie Davies, DeRo and friends (minus Pontius) hope that games-in-hand are a blessing not a curse down the stretch. If United don’t take care of business against visiting Chivas tonight, they don’t belong.

The next is the night’s main event: The New York Red Bulls–home after a kick-and-scratch win over Dallas–need putdown Real Salt Lake. TRSL’s a savvy team, with or without Beckerman who’s out of action tonight, the Red Bulls better be ready to play. Opposite them, the Red Bulls are harder to figure out than an IKEA assembly manual.

For all the talk about Luke Rodgers being the missing ingredient, Juan Agudelo not playing, Rafa Marquez not playing…even though he’s on the pitch, this all gets back to Hans Backe–there is no way that the Red Bulls should fall out of the playoffs.

And finally, back to Portland. The friendly confines of home. The ridiculous advantage in foul calls. Darlington Nagbe looking just silky in the playmaker role. If the Timbers lose to a San Jose team missing Bobby Convey and Ike Opara at home….well they won’t, 3-1 the final.

(no I haven’t started drinking yet)

  2. Early start/Midweek having an impact on the crowd in dc…

  3. If Adrian Brody and Keanu had a kid, and that kid just fluffed his shot after getting called offside… He would be Josh Wolff.

DC go up 1 – 0 on their first goal from a header this year.

So is there any way that Hans Backe has a job tomorrow?

Not sure what the heck happened with Hans. Grant Wahl compared him to Ruud Gullit, which is a complete misdiagnosis: Hans looked like a very good coach last year and even the first ten games or so this year.

But he and the technical director have bumbled pretty much incessantly since then. Some journalist is going to have to get to the bottom of this, because it’s a real mystery (IMHO).

I’m not sure there is any other course of action than to fire him.

  6. All reports from the stands in Portland indicate a Timbers Army that is absolutely amped.

Donovan missed a sitter in the first 5 minutes of the game against Ajaluejense (sp?) in Costa Rica. Yeeesh. Beckham has also looked unusually slow. And the ref looks SO much like that @#$ ref from from Mali. It makes me extremely uneasy.

    Also, c’mon DC united! Embarrassing.

  8. So obviously the Red Bulls exploded last night, but Rafa Marquez decided to go “one louder”

“I think this is a team game and unfortunately there isn’t an equal level between my teammates and I,’’ said Marquez, who gesticulated to the crowd. “I’m not paying attention to that. I’m actually focusing on my game…I’m focusing on performing at my highest performance, at the highest level. That doesn’t mean the whole back line can perform at the same level, that’s the problem.’’

Of course the above should not be surprising given that this is the same person who did…
