Outstanding Camp Cupcake Invites: Who’s (Maybe) HDC-Bound

Who's this year's January campers?

Who’s this year’s January campers?

January camp is slated to likely begin sometime next week with an expectation of a full roster out perhaps Monday by USSF.

Here’s a few bets on the roster: (A * denotes the invitation/attendance has already been confirmed.)

G: Nick Rimando, Sean Johnson, Bill Hamid

DEF: Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, George John, Steven Beitashour, Sheanon Williams, Heath Pearce, Amobi Okugo, Chance Myers

MID: Alfredo Morales*, Kyle Beckerman, Alejandro Bedoya, Graham Zusi, Dax McCarty, Nick DeLeon

FW: Chris Pontius, Freddy Adu, Josh Gatt, Benny Feilhaber, Mix Diskerud, Brek Shea

STR: Eddie Johnson*, CJ Sapong, Alan Gordon, Juan Agudelo

* Wildcard: Maurice Edu. Edu has played 11 minutes all season from Stoke City. Might he get released to Klinsmann’s mothership for January. Probably not, but…

I definitely think Steve Clark deserves a shot in the January camp. I would consider Diskerud a MID and not a FW. When playing for RBK he mostly plays as a CM in a 442/4411.

Put Diskerud at FW because he played CAM effectively when he came in against Russia, but fair point.

I didn’t know enough about Steve Clark so I left him out. Assume it’s possible. Klinsmann tends to take a more measured approach than Bob Bradley to a new player, making him prove his selection a few times over before coming in.

But we’ll see. With SJ and Hamid faltering this year, it’s probably a good bet.

Clark has played very well this season. He doesn’t have the greatest defense in front of him and kept quite a few clean sheets still. His distribution from foot is not the best but he is very athletic and a good shot stopper. But I have no clue if he is even on the radar for JK.

    • Clark tweeted today that he was headed back to Europe.

There have been more name leaks.

    Nick Deleon
    Seanon Williams
    Brek Shea
    Sean Johnson

Personally I hope McCarty is not chosen over Perry Kitchen who I think is more deserving.

Oh and I don’t expect Feilhaber to be on this roster. I know some of you pundits have man crausehs for him, but I wouldn’t expect him to anywhere near Klinsmann’s top choices for a Janaury camp invite.

        *Man Crushes*

Feilhaber is probably the most interesting fringe player going. Big tournament experience, WC vet, has had big moments.

This would be last hurrah no?

I like Perry Kitchen, but he is not nearly the player that McCarty is already. Remember Kitchen struggled with a less pivotal role of CB for the U-23s. He was good in DC, but that’s mainly because DeRo, Pontius, DeLeon, and Najar took a lot of the ball handling pressure of him. In JK’s system there is more work for the CDM.

But he’s got the ability at some point.

  3. How many players do they expect to bring in? The usual 23 players? I guess it really just matters what this january camp is about. Is it to create the core Gold Cup USMNT and/or to find future USMNT for 2018?

If its to find core group for Gold Cup, I would think Feilhaber (not a favorite of mine); McCarty; Beckerman; and possibly Pearce get picked. If its to find future talent, Williams; Okugo, DeLeon, Diskerud, etc…

I’ve seen other articles question why Morales would get a look since he’s not playing much in Germany but why would Adu get a call up? He’s had a horrible season and well… what has he done to deserve the opportunity?

adrian, i think maybe the answers to a lot of your questions are not either, or answers. all the players called in are expected to compete for spots, otherwise they dont get called in, and players are called in for different reason, and based on different rationales.

Why did Adu make this list, he just hasn’t played well of late and I don’t see why you would take a spot away from someone who may need a good looking at. We all know what he can do, so try someone else.

Shea, Williams, DeLeon and Johnson have not been confirmed. @Cboehm retracted his tweet which said they were, saying that “these were names he was hearing”

Morales and Johnson are the only ones confirmed.

    Also, Feilhaber and Adu? No.

Hey just needed to say that some of the confirmed players you listed like Shea, De Leon and Pontious aren’t actually confirmed. That info was based on a tweet from a guy polling the twittosphere to see who people wanted to go. The only two confirmed players are Morales and Johnson

Is JJ coming over while suspended?

    • Posted by Conor on 2013/01/05 at 7:42 PM

Not suspended for 8 games like last year. Suspension isn’t long enough to warrant him going (I think).

    Justin Morrow should be invited.

You really think Alan Gordon gets called in? He went through hip surgery off-season, and the expected recovery for that operation is up to 6 months. Much more likely to be Wondolowski, so he is in shape by February for the hexagonal.

Why no dempsey Howard Bradley etc. wheres all our studs

  11. Well, Agudelo is joining Graham Zusi for a weeks training in West Ham so it doesn’t look like he’ll be at January camp per twitter.
