Now that domestic soccer is off the ground, let’s concentrate on some plastic. :>

  1. Bring on the disc! Some beautiful throws there. And the defense made me sweat just watching it.

My knees ache watching this. Seriously. Still, it’s an exciting time for the game. As a seasoned sports writer, do you have any thoughts on which pro league is better positioned?

      Easily MLS obviously.

Frisbee will have to overcome stigmas (“does that involve dogs?), a culture w/o refs, and more. I would have started with teams just on the West Coast. I think the league is being aspirational, but it is, to date, very well organized.

      • Part of the problem is that to someone who only has a passing interest in ultimate, the game is insanely more complicated than you would expect. Now, if you’re watching on TV and you’ve got a good announcer, that’s less of an issue – but I think that ultimate might actually be harder to grasp for a newbie from a rules standpoint than soccer. That said, it’s a great sport to watch when you actually understand what’s going on.

Matt, do you think there’s any chance that we get our sport into the Olympics some day? I don’t know if it would add anything to the sport in the States, but just on a “hey, I get to watch disc on TV” front, I’d be pretty psyched.

      • Jeppley, part of the problem is that at best, at the very best, most non-fans are aware of a single player in the world of ultimate – and that’s just because Brody has trick shot videos on youtube.

  3. God I miss disc. I’ll never be at club level – my game is too sloppy and underdeveloped for me to be more than a decent East Coast summer league player (I blame the four to six months out of the year that the weather keeps leagues from playing around Pittsburgh) – but as long as I’m in a game where people actually know how to force, are willing to make dump passes and not turn the game into a huckfest, I’ll be happy.

I made the first two cuts for the Boston MLU team, but got cut in the last round. Good luck to all the new pros.
