Good first half hour. Hate that we maintain the habit of lowering our intensity after a goal in the first 1/3 of a game. Hope we keep pressing in the second half or I’m gonna have to go ahead and look for some blood pressure medication.

A bit too reminiscent of the Honduras game for me so far — nice early play, get the goal, and we’ve sagged a bit. 1 point is still what I’m targeting — call me a pessimist.

Cameron in for Gonzalez?
Gonzo is not stepping up and pressuring effectively. Even more important though is how deep Bradley is dropping to receive the ball. Bradley especially drops reeallly deep to pick the ball up from Gonzo (i.e. Bradley knows Gonzo’s limitations in distribution). Cameron being in just from a distribution point and allowing Bradley to push slightly higher would make a big difference. We could keep the match in Jamaica’s end and close the gulf of central space between Bradley and JJ in possession.

Not really happy with that half but some positives (Jozy trying to be active, though being way too sloppy in staying onsides). Hope Beasley’s romps way forward don’t come back to bite us.

Wow. Classic road game in Concacaf. Reminded me of the game against El Salvador last cycle, except we got the win hear instead of a draw.
First thing that comes to mind is the CB pairing and whether or not Cameron gets another opportunity there. I think he’s easily the best stand up tackler on the team, and though he can fill in at RB I don’t think he has the understanding to get forward when he needs to in order to be effective as a fullback. Gonzo for me has the longer term upside than Beisler, but I think it would be hard for Jurgen right now to move away from that pairing.
I thought Fabian looked poor tonight. Poor first touch and overran players a lot in defensive positions. Right now, if LD comes back, I would have him taking Fabian’s spot rather than Zusi’s.
Left back is still a concern. Beasley is turning in some admirable performances, but a lot of it looks like ad-libbing than solid positional understanding and sound defensive fundamentals. As much as I want Stevie C there, I’m concerned that he just won’t be at his peak come WC time, though I’m still optimistic. Castillo looks better at LMF, but it would be nice to see him tested more at LB. He and Beasley both seem to get pushed around too easily for my taste, but both are good on the ball and getting forward, and so I ultimately see it as a matter of match-ups.
Hard to rate Evans right now. Can’t say I he look exposed at any point and not sure how he holds up against world-class wing play, but overall, I like the combination of skills that he brings. Smart, clean in distribution, and when necessary he has the offensive skills to be effective going forward.
Either way, a great road win that puts us in good shape. Panama will be interesting, given that Zusi is out and possibly Jones as well. Do we see Holden in the middle, or will it be Kljestan or Cameron. Davis for Zusi, or E. Johnson?

Also, I think the SG brought this up in another piece, but I would agree that FJ doesn’t seem to enjoy playing in the heat. There was a piece on ESPN where after coming and playing in North America recently, German players admitted to Jones that they understand why qualification in Concacaf is so difficult given the weather, and that they easily prefer playing in Europe over playing in the heat of North America. It doesn’t seem a stretch that FJ feels similar and is uncomfortable with the playing conditions.

Frankly, I’m amazed that anyone wants Beasley to play anything other than left back at this point. Tonight was the first goal scored in three qualifiers that he’s started, and it was a set piece that had nothing to do with him.
He makes you nervous? If he plays like this every game, he can keep making me nervous for the rest of this cycle.
I’m a big fan of Fabian Johnson, this was not a good game for him. The Jamaicans were fast, physical, and erratic- Johnson suffered from the lack of rhythm and possession more than anybody- meanwhile, Zusi was right at home, since he plays games like this all the time in MLS.
Here’s why he should start next game (he will anyway because of the Zusi suspension)- Panama will be a far less frantic game. Any game where possession and more intricate play is possible is one which Johnson should thrive in. US fans keep bellowing about how we want more fluid attacks, better movement, more attractive soccer. Fabian still managed two good plays at the beginning, one a passing sequence around the 18, and one good cut and shot inside- both made the highlights. After that, he was probably the least effective attacking player. But I believe in him- I can’t think of a team in the world more dangerously unstable than Jamaica, more composed teams should be an easier task for him.
If he struggles against Panama, then it’s officially a problem.

The Zusi suspension and possible Jones absence may be a blessing in disguise as it gets both gents a break.
